Mark 8:21 - "And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?"
How do we not understand God and what He says in His Word? Here are three very simple thoughts on how we can gain understanding.
Proverbs 4:7 - "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."
Psalm 119:104 - "Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way."
It is through God and His Word that we get wisdom, knowledge, understanding, power, encouragement, faith, love, and fellowship. It is not by accident that growth cannot happen without the seed [God's Word] and water [Holy Spirit].
The problem is not God's Word, the problem we all face is the amount of God's Word we actually read, apply, and practice. If we want understanding, we must HEED God's Word.
Deuteronomy 8:11 - "Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:"
I once heard a great message from this passage about what not to forget. This is not the outline that was preached, but here are some things we must remember:
1. What God has done for us (it will lead to renewed faith in Him)
2. What love God has given us (Salvation, but also new, daily mercy)
3. What grace God has provided (we have earned no blessing, but that God wants to give)
Psalm 7:17 - "I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high."
Does that really say "according to his righteousness"? There is no end to God's righteousness. Neither should my praise end. Neither should yours. If you struggle to find something to praise God for, go back to the remembering section and thank God for the good things He has done and given you. If you still can't find something to praise God for, ask Him. He will show you
